CHRIS’ PICKS (06/13/18 COMIC PULL LIST)

Welcome back to Chris’ Picks!  A weekly article where I outline my personal comic pull list for the week.  Let me know in the comments what you are picking up this Wednesday!

1 – Mister Miracle #9 (DC) $3.99 US

By – Tom King, Mitch Gerads

unnamed

Their Description – After war comes peace. The bloody battles that waged across New Genesis and Apokolips have come to an end, and now Mister Miracle and Kalibak must sit down and discuss a truce. Can Scott Free trust the former minions of Darkseid to keep their word? Not likely, but a leader sometimes has to take a risk in service to the greater good. Perhaps the more pressing question, though, is whether Big Barda can make it through the negotiations without beating the life out of the assassin Kanto.

My Take – Anyone that knows my comic preferences can attest to my love of Tom and Mitch’s run of Mister Miracle.  It is beautiful, it is harsh, and it is real and relatable.  Pick this one up!!

2 – Oblivion Song #4 (Image) $3.99 US

By – Robert Kirkman, Lorenzo De Felici

unnamed-2

Their Description – Nathan Cole is taken deeper into Oblivion than he’s ever journeyed before…and what he finds there is astounding.

My Take – Robert Kirkman has made a hugely popular post-apocalyptic franchise and might be seeking to do it again with Oblivion Song.  I hope that this comic evolves into something great.  Also, the fact that is only a few issues in makes it appealing for new readers to jump in.

3 – Star Wars Darth Vader #17 (Marvel) $3.99 US

By – Charles Soule, Giuseppe Camuncoli

unnamed-3

Their Description – As the remnants of the Mon Cala resistance crumble into the seas, Vader and his Inquisitors finally confront the Jedi survivor at its core. The seas will weep…

My Take – I feel like the current arc of Darth Vader is coming to a close in a big way.  The Empire is showing its dark intentions and the galaxy will have to respond accordingly.  We are also going to witness Vader and Barr face one another!

4 – Magic Order #1 of 6 (Image) $3.99 US

By – Mark Millar, Olivier Coipel

unnamed-4

Their Description – We live in a world where we’ve never seen a monster, and The Magic Order is the reason we sleep safely in our beds. Magic meets the mob in THE MAGIC ORDER, as five families of magicians-sworn to protect our world for generations-must battle an enemy who’s picking them off one by one. By day, they live among us as our neighbors, friends, and co-workers, but by night, they are the sorcerers, magicians, and wizards that protect us from the forces of darkness…unless the darkness gets them first. MARK MILLAR’s first NETFLIX comic book, drawn by the incredible OLIVIER COIPEL (Amazing Spider-Man, Thor).

My Take – This series sold me on the description alone.  The Magic Order sounds like a violent and mysterious trip that makes me think of a dark alternative take on the Men In Black….with monsters instead of aliens…or is this a gritty Fantastic Beasts??  Either way I’m picking this up!

5 – Animosity Evolution #6 (Aftershock) $3.99 US

By – Marguerite Bennett, Eric Gapstur

unnamed-5

Their Description – Conspiracies tighten around Adam and his companions as a bloody interspecies gang war explodes in the City by the Sea. From the brilliant mind of creator/writer Marguerite Bennett (INSEXTS, Bombshells and Batwoman) with artwork by SHIPWRECK’s Eric Gapstur-ANIMOSITY: EVOLUTION is an exciting new series that expands upon this already amazing world!

My Take – Marguerite has done a great job expanding the world of Animosity.  We have seen the fine details of what happened to the world when the animals “woke”.  Evolution ties well to the main series and gives us more of this interesting world.

6 – Venom #2 (Marvel) $3.99 US

By – Donny Cates, Ryan Stegman

unnamed-6

Their Description – REX PART 2 FROM DONNY CATES AND RYAN STEGMAN!
Long ago, a mythical monster once terrorized both humanity and the Klyntar alike. Now, it’s awake. And it’s angry.
To make matters worse, this ancient horror has a unique influence over the Venom symbiote – an influence that threatens to sever Eddie Brock’s connection with his Other!
If he survived the first issue, that is…

My Take – When I was young and first getting into comics, Venom was my favorite character.  This was purely based on his design because he isn’t the most interesting character.  I did enjoy the first issue of this series enough to come back though.  Seeing Eddie struggle with keeping his symbiote sedated and discovering that he was not the first person to have these kinds of alien struggles.
